Ektachrome from the archives. I took this picture in 1995 in Dalat, Vietnam, on the grounds of the former Emperor Bao Dai's summer home there (he was the last emperor of Vietnam). The house is an art deco style place-- everyone calls it a palace, but it's really a house with a couple extra bedrooms and a nice garden. The place was packed with domestic tourists and, although a part of Vietnam's recent history, wasn't exactly being maintained as a museum. Most of the furniture had been carted off at an earlier date, but people were letting their children jump up and down on the emperor's sectional. In the garden there were a number of Vietnamese men dressed up in a variety of costumes and people had their pictures taken with them for a fee. (Dalat is the Niagra Falls of Vietnam-- it has a bunch of waterfalls and iis where everyone goes for their honeymoon, and it is dense with cheesy locations to have your picture taken) Among the characters represented were a cowboy (with a Shetland pony!), several vaguely identifiable annimals, and, of course, Santa Claus, though very few people there seemed to know who he was. The things I like best about this picture (which I have always remembered taking, but only found a couple of weeks ago) are that I took it in May, which is really not the right season (nevermind the right location), and that his boots are rubber farmer wellies.

On this photo you can see two additional falls in the distance - Black Fella Falls and Jack Brunton’s Falls- tumbling down the cliffs surrounding Killarney. They can be seen during wet weather only.
